Thank You, Thankful Child
My oldest is about to play basketball (for the first time) at the nearby parochial school. This is the child I've been trying to convince to sign-up for a couple of years. He plays a casual game with the neighborhood kids but the idea of a competitive game does not appeal to him. I don't know what happened but when the sign-up for Fall basketball came out he begged me to sign him up. I do have an inkling that it's probably because two of his very close friends will be playing.
On short notice an open gym was announced and we found ourselves scrambling for basketball shoes. I told the boy he may NOT ask for brand name shoes unless he wants to eat mac 'n cheese for the rest of the year LOL. So off we went to Target to find a reasonable pair of basketball shoes.
The boy was bouncing off the walls after open gym, he was so excited about playing, but more importantly he was excited about the inquiries about his shoes. "Are they Michael Jordan's?" was apparently asked of him a few times. This is my (frugal) child who is trying not to be "of this world" but would love to own a pair of Michael Jordan's.
What I'm truly thankful for is the attitude of gratitude that this child displayed. He thanked me when we were at Target for running there last minute and thankful for the shoes despite the non-Nike price. This is not an isolated case, he is naturally thankful and appreciative of every kind deed accorded him. There were even moments that he puts my ingratitude in perspective. Those are the moments when I feel like I am doing something right with my kids, this one in particular. So today my gratitude belongs to this thankful child. Deo Gratias.
