A Tale of Two Kyrie's

It was our first Midnight Mass in our new parish. I have high expectations where music is concerned (I'm nerdy like that).  Midnight Mass in our old parish was always moving and memorable. The musical genius that is the Church's patrimony is in full force, trumpets and all that holy night. The new parish has an amazing choir, if you wanted the Church's musical patrimony every Sunday that's where you will find it.  I think I've shed so many tears just from sitting at Mass moved by the music and the singing.  And sometimes I'm moved to tears by the silence of daily Mass. Or maybe because this past year was also the year that the Holy Spirit granted me the gift of tears LOL.

Anyhow, I've always loved the Gloria, triumphant, joyful Gloria. I love it at Midnight Mass, I love it at Easter morning.  I love the chanted Latin Gloria but my heart belongs to the English, joyful Gloria. Before I digress any further, let me tell you how the choir sang Kyrie, of a version I've not heard before. Long, haunting, meditative. Thank God I skipped the mascara that night.  Long after the Mass was over, I still couldn't get it out of my head. Such lovely begging for mercy.  How can the King of Glory refuse such a beautiful plea? I am so sure that if I sang Kyrie ala Palestrina I will be granted eternal mercy ;-)

Before you think I'm high brow about Kyrie, Latin and such let me tell you about another Kyrie that I love. David Crowder's God Have Mercy (Kyrie Eleison).  It's modern, its in English and beautifully sung. It's the Kyrie you sing while you do the dishes and fold laundry. In fact, you need to buy the whole cd- Give Us Rest, Requiem Mass. David Crowder is a closet Catholic, I think LOL

For your enjoyment I am attaching a video for both Kyrie versions.

What church music moves you to (tearful) contemplation?
