The Patience of Job At The Orchard

Every year we make a special trip to the orchard to pick our favorite breed of apples - suncrisp.  Every year we go on a weekday to avoid the crowds.  This year we made the mistake of going on a weekend. Mistake. Big. I thought I was being "efficient" by trying to get everything accomplished in a day - volleyball double-header, apple orchard, pumpkin patch.

Getting to the apple orchard wasn't a big deal.  The crowd, more than we were used to, wasn't terrible until we had to check out. We were in line for close to an hour. For those of you who have never been to an apple orchard (my peeps in the old country), this is a line where there is no way out.  You can't just drop your apples to the ground or give it to another person and drive out of the lot. You have to go through checkout unless you decide to abandon your car and walk home. Since it was way out in the country walking home was not an option. At the checkout the kind lady told us that they were unusually busy (thank you Buckeyes for not playing a game that day) but the pumpkin patch is fairly slow. That was music to my ears. Because I just gotta get the pumpkins.

The pumpkin patch was close to the orchard so we decided to go for it.  But like the orchard once you are in there is no way out unless you break the law and drive over the pumpkins to abandon the lines. The orchard lady did not know what she was talking about.  The pumpkin patch line was even worse! From the getting in to the getting out, it was insanity times infinity.  Let me just say that I felt a little bit like Job but unlike him I did not curse at God to take my life away.  I just asked that He speed up the line a bit so I can take my family home.  Fortunately, God is a loving God, the younger kids fell asleep while the older two amused themselves taking pictures and singing to Queen while the hubby and I cracked corny jokes.  Total time at the pumpkin patch and apple orchard - close to two hours.  Actual time spent picking pumpkins and apples - 20 minutes.  Not very efficient.

Despite the ordeal everyone was in a good mood so I was able to take happy pictures:

the perfect collaboration
this pie was almost worth all the trouble at the orchard ;-)

  1. I ran out of time Friday and we ended up at the orchard around noon Saturday. I knew we were in trouble when the line of traffic on 310 extended far enough that I could barely see the roof of the market. It took ten minutes to pick and and hour waiting in traffic in and out. Never, ever again on a weekend.

  2. PS you are so nice to let your kids pick pumpkins. We get ours at Marc's for $3.99. I draw the line at pumpkin patches.

    1. Definitely no weekend trips there again. The pumpkin patch is definitely a treat, right up there with the Christmas tree farm. I do enjoy seeing the children's faces (especially C!) light up when they see some of the bigger pumpkins. I was told Aldi's pumpkins were $1.99, maybe when they are older and the patch becomes less exciting (will that ever happen?)

    2. Faith is the only one who cares about the pumpkin patch, but the big kids still carve. Faith would have to go to the pumpkin patch with me and that would be BORING anyway!
