The Signature
He signed the restaurant check. He mentioned that it has taken a while to get used to not writing RN (registered nurse) next to his name when it's not work related. Then I made a confession, fourteen years long overdue, of the countless times I practiced a new signature bearing his last name before our wedding. A seeming innocent act that bears with it a new reality. Of life changing. Of being one with another. (Of having a foreign sounding last name next to my very Asian/Hispanic first name!). Of leaving mother and father to a life cleaved to another.
How long did it take for you to get used to your married signature?

I was glad for my married name as my maiden name was very common. Now when I have to spell it to everyone who doesn't know me, I'd be happy for the common one!

ReplyDeleteOur husbands will never know the joy lol
ReplyDeleteI can't remember practicing. But I remember I was so happy to change my last name! I hated the sound of my maiden name. Now I have alliteration going for me. LOL
