30 Days of Thanks - Words

Hi, friends!

The second child here, returning after my brother so enthusiastically took over for me yesterday. I fell asleep when I came home from school and by the time I woke up he was already typing up a storm, giggling proudly as he went. If you missed his post yesterday, you can read it here; I'm sure he would be very pleased if you did.

My love of books, writing, and words began at the young age of four years old, when I first learned to read. By the age of six, I was reading 350+ page books and the Little House on the Prairie series was my entire life. I was seven when I first attempted to write a story, which never became more than a paragraph. When I was ten, I participated in NaNoWriMo for the first and only time. My story and word count goal changed a number of times throughout the month and I never finished the story, but I do think I hit my word count. That Christmas my cousin and I wrote a short story about a Christmas fairy, and while it was only a few paragraphs, it was my first ever completed piece. Who knows, maybe one day it can become into a children's storybook.

To this day I still write nearly every day. Whether it's in the direction of fictional short stories, messy poetry, school essays, or something as simple as journaling. I love to write. I've never been much of a talker; it stresses me out and I frequently stumble over my words and struggle to string the right words together to express my thoughts. Writing, on the other hand, is fluent and almost a mindless task. I have time to think, revise, and edit. It never flows as perfectly and eloquently as it does in my head but it's significantly better than my attempts at expressing myself verbally.

As for reading, I rarely read for my own entertainment these days. It's a mix of not enough free time and not knowing what books to read, so any suggestions are welcome. I still love to read and my record for the fastest time reading is two and a half hours for a six hundred page book. I can only do that when it's a book that truly interests me, or it's one I've previously read. Reading for school is another story; I can spend ages on a short chapter, then have to go back to re-read it because I wasn't paying attention the first time. Hopefully I'm not the only one?

Words are a lifelong love for me and I will gladly seize any opportunity to write (preferably creatively) and read. I have the dictionary/thesaurus downloaded on my phone, honestly it might be one of my most used apps because I love looking up common words and finding fancier, more flowery words to substitute. I think that might be why I love learning languages so much; I think of the vocabulary as a synonym for English words and it makes the whole process simpler and more interesting.

Have a blessed rest of your day, I'll be back again tomorrow :)
