30 Days Of Thanks - Rest

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” - Matthew 11:28

It's very timely for me to write this entry because I'm about ready to keel over.  It's been another long day of what was a planned long week of autumn cleaning. It is tiring but gratifying work and I will lay my tired and weary body in the bliss of accomplishment. And at the end of the week, I'm drinking beer! I'm that gal who always has beer in the fridge but never gets around to actually drinking it.

I think most of us are not particularly good at resting.  Our "open 24 hours" culture has seeped into our domestic lives making it harder to turn off the switch. I find myself in this conundrum as well. it probably comes with the territory when one is running a household. At least, that is what I tell myself. I'm still a bit miffed at the people who told me I must have so much free time now that I only have two kids to homeschool. The opposite, in fact, is true because now someone else is infringing and lording over what used to be my well-guarded calendar.  There is no adequate rest in that.

In spite of this lament, one of my favorite things to do to actively rest is to pray and meditate. I especially look forward to saying the rosary because I can rest in the hum of each prayer and give my busy brain over to the visuals of the mystery.  My current favorite is the Crowning With Thorns.  In that mystery I imagine the thorns piercing the head of Christ as the thorns of worries and concerns pierce mine. My miniscule torment incomparable to His. I find consolation in knowing He understands, He knows, He cares, He has a plan.

For the privilege of resting in Him who does not rest, today, I am truly thankful.

How do you rest your weary soul?
