Life Without The Baking Girl

" He will use your daughters as perfumers, cooks, and bakers." - 1 Samuel 8:13
I will step away from the Write31Days writing prompt for today because I don't think I have anything to contribute on the topic of how I'm trying to make the world a better place. Instead let me tell you about how life is so different without The Baking Girl at home.

We recently finished reading the book Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  It's a repeat for me but it's the first time for my young boys to hear this story.  We noticed that in most chapters  the author describes in great and mouth-watering detail what the Wilder family is eating.  It always seems to be a feast with their sumptuous meals capped off with cakes and pies for dessert.  My boys, as soon as they know a dinner/supper scene is about to commence, will start groaning because they get so hungry just listening to what Almanzo Wilder is eating.  Consequently, I get requests for baked goods that frankly, I don't enjoy making (baking has too many steps!).  I don't enjoy baking as much as cooking especially since The Baking Girl has been so masterful at it.  She has spoiled us and now that she is no longer homeschooled we are all feeling the absence of delicious baked goodies and her spontaneous baking sprees.  Usually when someone here says "I am craving apple pie!" the girl is quick to plan and execute the task.  I can't tell you how many times my boys have hinted that they are craving apple pie with me answering "remind me later".  But my goal is to stop with the baking lamentation and really take the time to just do it. This is my Advent plan so if you don't see me too much on here or on social media you know I am baking something delicious.  Maybe I will actually enjoy it and resurrect the baking part of this blog.  And maybe I will teach these boys to bake!

  1. I bet you all miss her. Is she feeling better? Going gluten-free really cut down on our baked goods so it's a rare treat for us. Plus, do I really need all that sugar? :) My oldest though has made a few cakes. He wants to have a "cakery."

    1. She is a bit better thanks to heavy duty antibiotics!
Part of the reason why I don't bake a lot is because I can't have too much sugar. After I fasted from it one Lent I couldn't go back, it would give me headaches. It's hard to bake or cook when you don't enjoy the process. But for the sake of my boys I have to just deal with it, they can taste the batter for me! You need to post your oldest child's baked goods!

  2. It's such an adjustment to have the kids go and grow up and go off to school! I am not looking forward to the next part where they go and grow up and move out. :(
