"Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win the perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. Thus I do not run aimlessly...No, I drive my body and train it, for fear, that having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified" - 1 Corinthians 9:25-27
In less than a month I will be running my first race of the year. My last race was the Turkey Trot. I don't remember why I did not sign up for the Fourth Of July one. My new goal is to run a race every season. I need the consistency of training and the motivation that a goal provides. I am just realizing that when I'm not disciplined in moving my body the discipline in other areas of my life also suffers.
Today I had what I will call an "ugly" run. I was trying a new drill that involved a faster start than my normal speed. My lungs burned, my body felt heavy, all of it just felt clumsy. I took longer walk breaks which made it feel as if I walked more than I ran. I was so annoyed at myself by the second mile it was so tempting to just walk home and run another day. But home is another two miles the other way so I decided to tough it out and be patient with myself. The rest of it was not very pretty but overcoming my desire to quit felt like a minor victory. I'm sure I will be all sorts of sore in the morning. It was a lesson on how getting out of your comfort zone is really quite uncomfortable!
My playlist today helped me a lot. When I found myself focusing too much on what my body is (not) doing I shifted the focus on the music. Music is life!
Here is what played in my ears today:
- Tired (Kygo Remix) - Alan Walker, Gavin James, Kygo (this song won't actually make you tired, it does in fact the opposite with Kygo's masterful remix, I love Kygo)
- September Song - JP Cooper (I LOVE this song even though it's already October)
- You and I - Johnnyswim (these two can't do anything wrong)
- Falling Faster - Andrew Ripp
- Afire Love - Ed Sheeran (this song always gets my attention away from my running suffering because the lyrics are just tragic and riveting and beautiful)
- Be My Forever - Christina Perri, Ed Sheeran (because after Afire Love you need a happy Ed Sheeran Song)
- Beautiful - Ben Rector (he is my guy, I have a playlist of just his songs)
- We Were Young (Sokko Extended Remix) - Gareth Emery, Alex & Sierra, Sokko
- Rising Up In Me- Ryan Corn
- The Woods (Evida Remix) - Majozi, Tresor, Evida
- I Get To Love You - Ruelle (this is a sweetheart song, it's slow and sweet and great for slowing down your run so you can daydream about your amazing spouse)
- Brand New - Ben Rector (this happy-clappy, joyful, fun song is everything!)
- When I'm With You - Ben Rector (because he is my guy)
- I've Got This Friend - The Civil Wars (there was a time in my life I loved the melodrama of their music but I am all about happiness nowadays)
Autumn, Nicole, Barb, and Christine

Funny meme. I have a few homeschool moms here running the Columbus Children's marathon coming up. The one's daughter had been treated there (brain tumor) so it's a special thing for them.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on training and the upcoming race! I'm going to check out your songs for something new. I see some I like so I may like others.
You will like them all 😁
